Minimally invasive surgery has been the trend in various specialties and
continues to evolve as new technology develops. The development of robotic surgery in
gynecology remains at its infancy, especially in Taiwan. From March 2009 to October
2012, our team has accomplished 134 complicated gynecological diseases including
staging operation for endometrial cancer, nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy
hysterectomy for cervical cancer, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes dissection, deep
infiltrating endometriosis, presacral colpopexy, tuboplasty, subtotal hysterectomy,
myomectomy and ovarian cystectomy without conversion to laparotomy and major
complications. Our experiences do show that robotic surgery is feasible and safe for
patients with complicated gynecologic diseases. The widespread use and the continuing
evolution of robotic surgery may further change the picture of gynecologic surgery in
the future. How to delineate the indications and integrate robotic surgery into current
training programs in Taiwan warrants further investigations.
