While engineered devices have long been used for clinical purposes, developments in science and technology continue to bring new opportunities and challenges.? Due to increasingly close and complex interactions between the body and engineered devices or materials, future progress hinges on better understanding of the body, particularly various physical and chemical signals from tissues and organs and the responses of tissues and cells to artificial materials and stimulations.? Examples will be presented to illustrate several emerging areas.? First, research on cellular responses to mechanical properties of the environment has impacted conceptually on applications from tissue regeneration to cancer treatment.? Second, better knowledge in cardiac functions and blood susceptibility has led to innovative cardiac assist devices based on fluid dynamics and native tissues.? Third, mathematical analysis of brain neural signals has laid the groundwork for brain-computer interfaces and associated robotic devices to assist patients of neuromuscular deficits.
