Osteoarthritis (OA) of knee joints is the very common diagnosis in the elderly, causing significant pain leading to disability and decreased quality, and heavy burden of national health issue. We will focus on pharmacologic therapies except intra-articular hyaluronic acid derivatives and prolotheapy. A new trend of pharmacologic therapies according to the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons(AAOS) will be introduced , including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), acetaminophen, opiates, SNRIs….etc.
　　Also, new OA drug will be highlighted on bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7), also called osteogenic protein-1 (OP-1), β-Nerve growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, human serum albumin and methotrexate. Finally ,we’ll bring you one new drug not proved by FDA yet but will potentially used by alternative medicine in the near future, the prolozone therapy.
