Myopia is highly prevalent among schoolchildren in East Asia and Singapore; Taiwanese schoolchildren have the highest prevalence of myopia among all schoolchildren worldwide. This high prevalence was first confirmed when Professor Long-Kuang Lin and colleagues initiated a nationwide, cross-sectional, population-based epidemiological study on myopia among Taiwanese schoolchildren at 1983. From 1983-2000, prevalence of myopia increased from 5.8% to 20% in children aged 7 years and from 74% to 84% in children aged 16-18 years. Subsequent survey was continued in 2006 and 2010. A clear trend of increasing myopia prevalence was observed among schoolchildren.
From 2015 to 2016,  NTUH conducted the 8th national vision survey. We screened 7474 students from 35 kindergartens, 23 elementary schools, 20 junior high schools, and 23 senior high schools in a 2-year period. In this talk, we would like to present the results of two-year survey of schoolchildren and pre-schoolchildren myopia in Taiwan. Risk factors for myopia development were analyzed in which near work--including the early usage of electronic devices, mobile phones, and desktop computers, is the key factors for the high prevalence of myopia. Vision surveillance work in Taiwan has already been rated as one of the most complete system in the world. Based on the continuous experience in the past 30 years, we suggest carrying out vision surveillance epidemiological survey every five years, with combination of the vision screening work conducting by Ministry of Education, to construct a complete myopia monitoring system
