Sarcopenia is an age-related geriatric syndrome which is associated with subsequent disability and morbidity. It is characterized by the gradual loss of muscle mass, muscle strength, and muscle quality. The etiology of sarcopenia is currently found to be multifactorial, and most of the pharmacological researches are focused on the muscular factors in aging. However, lots of neurologic effects might also occur on sarcopenia at various levels from the brain to the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). Although the complete mechanism underlying the development of sarcopenia is still waiting to be elucidated, we review in this talk that one of the primary trigger of sarcopenia may be neurogenic in origin based on the intimate relationship between the nervous and muscular system.
